SUMMARY:A Slice of Saturday night
DESCRIPTION:A Slice of Saturday Night made its West End début at London’s Arts Theatre on September 27\, 1989. The story tells of seven teenagers who dance and eye each other and flirt on a Saturday night at popular Club A Go Go in a town in the British provinces. Sue is going out with Gary\, but he flirts with Penny and the other girls at every opportunity. Sharon and Rick like each other but are too shy to tell each other. Eddie is challenged by the boys to persuade “frigid” Bridget to “touch his whatsit” by closing time\, over the course of the night he tries everything\, with very little success. The owner of the club\, ageing rocker Eric “Rubber-legs” De Vene\, watches and lends an ear to the young people as they navigate the rituals of teenage fashion\, music\, sexual mores and relationships. The show has some great original music in it and promises to be great fun for all on stage and in the audience.

Some of the lines and songs refer to their ages. \nThe Boys \n\nGary –  good-looking\, leader of the gang of boys\, a chauvinistic braggart who thinks he’s God’s gift to women\, acts tough but is really a bit of a coward\nRick – the innocent among the boys\, looks up to Gary and tries to imitate him. Shy but very engaging.\nEddie – a pill-popping goofball\, appears stupid but there is more to him than meets the eye\n\nThe Girls \n\nBridget – natural leader of the girls\, thinking she’s a cut above everyone else and quite imposing. Known as ‘Frigid Bridget’\nSharon – the new girl. Rick’s equivalent in the girls. Sweet and shy and pretty in the ‘girl next door’ type of way\nSue – Gary’s long-suffering girlfriend\, slightly overweight and very conscious of her bust\, very insecure. She adores Gary. Constantly putting on a brave face and holding back the tears.\nPenny – the ‘easy’ girl of the group\, sexier and more knowing than the others. Attractive in a ‘brassy’ way.\n\nThere is no chorus as such\, though we may decide to augment the cast with a few extra parts to play ensemble parts. \nThe ‘Adult’ \nEric ‘Rubber legs’ de Vene. A forty-year old rocker. Eric owns the club and he’s a hard man\, with a soft spot for his patrons. \n  \nAuditions at the LubYa Youth Centre\, in Manchester Place\, Dunstable. For best access\, park in the car park in Regents Street\, Dunstable\, and walk through the alley way to the hall. It is the first one you come to.
